The Lac qui Parle Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Minnesota was established in 1936 as a flood control project. It became a wildlife refuge in 1957.

The refuge became a top destination for goose hunting, with up to 150,000 geese migrating through in the fall.

As many as 12,000 hunters would participate in the regulated goose hunt each year.

The refuge was the epicenter of goose hunting in the 1980s.
